  • A prestigious award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for achievement in movies.
  • Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is an esteemed group of approximately 6,000 men and women in the motion picture industry who are most skilled artists and craftsmen in the motion picture world.
  • Based upon their reviews and votes, every year Oscar awards(statuettes) are presented for outstanding individual or collective efforts of the year in the various fields of the Film Industry.
  • The first awards ceremony was held in May of 1929.
  • There are also the Scientific or Technical awards apart from the main categories shown above.
  • In addition, special awards are voted on by committees, rather than by the Academy membership as a whole, and may not be awarded every year.

Oscar Statuettes:

  • According to www.oscars.org, officially named 'Academy Award of Merit', the statuette is better known by a nickname, Oscar, the origins of which aren't clear. The Academy itself didn't use the nickname officially until 1939.
  • Each Oscar statuette is made from the alloy britannium and is then plated in copper, nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold.
  • Each statuette stands 13-1/2 inches tall and weighs 8-1/2 pounds.
