Individual TaxPayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Individual TaxPayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and its format (xxx-xxx-xxxx) is similar to Social Security Number (SSN). Those people who may not be eligible to get SSN from Social Security Administration (SSA) will apply for Individual Tax Identification Number.

You need a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) if you: (Few examples)

  • Have income that is reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
  • You are claimed as a dependent on someone's Federal income tax return.
  • If you want to open a Bank Account/Stock Account.
  • If want to obtain a Driving License from Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

How to apply for a ITIN?

You can apply ITIN personally or by email or by any acceptance agent authorized by Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Whenever you apply for ITIN, don�t send originals. Always try to send copy of the documents. Regarding the documents submitted to IRS, Revised W7 form, copies of Passport and I-94 card are important. For other documents, please refer to website www.irs.gov. You will get ITIN within 4 � 6 weeks from the date of application. If you don�t receive your ITIN, call IRS and check the status of your application.
