Individual TaxPayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Individual TaxPayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and its format (xxx-xxx-xxxx) is similar to Social Security Number (SSN). Those people who may not be eligible to get SSN from Social Security Administration (SSA) will apply for Individual Tax Identification Number.

You need a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) if you: (Few examples)

  • Have income that is reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
  • You are claimed as a dependent on someone's Federal income tax return.
  • If you want to open a Bank Account/Stock Account.
  • If want to obtain a Driving License from Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

How to apply for a ITIN?

You can apply ITIN personally or by email or by any acceptance agent authorized by Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Whenever you apply for ITIN, don’t send originals. Always try to send copy of the documents. Regarding the documents submitted to IRS, Revised W7 form, copies of Passport and I-94 card are important. For other documents, please refer to website www.irs.gov. You will get ITIN within 4 – 6 weeks from the date of application. If you don’t receive your ITIN, call IRS and check the status of your application.
